In college I did an independent study for graphic design so I could learn illustration. My class assignments were to create editorials for the NYTimes book reviews. The point was to a real world basis to editorial illustration and learn how to translate ideas in my own signature style. I learned a great deal about my strengths and what to continue improving on. For this illustration I chose the book review of the 2016 novel Autumn by Ali Smith (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/17/books/review/autumn-ali-smith.html?_r=0). Her book Autumn is about the friendship and opinions of a young woman named Elisabeth Demand in her 30s and an elderly man named Daniel Gluck. To illustrate their friendship I created a rocking chair to represent Elisabeth and a hospital bed to represent Daniel. I used bright, but fading colors to illustrate Autumn and their personalities. I used size and spacing to illustrate their age difference and relationship to each other. The use of furniture instead of people was represent the calm feel of their relationship.
